Could Dougie Hamilton and New Jersey terminate his contract this offseason?
Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet: New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton has two years left on his deal at a $9 million cap hit. The 32-year-old is owed a $7.4 million bonus on July 1st. After that signing bonus is paid, he’s only owed $6.25 million in actual dollars.
Would the Devils retain any salary if he’s dealt now? What if Hamilton could get the Devils to honor his $7.4 million bonus, and then terminate his contract if they can’t trade him by July 1st? He’d be UFA, and the Devils would have $9 million off the books.

NHL Rumors: New Jersey Devils Want to Make a Dougie Hamilton Trade That Makes Sense
** NHLRumors.com transcription
Pagnotta: “It’s an interesting storyline. The way this kind of all went about, because Boston obviously wanted to make this happen, but they wanted the extension in place. And it seemed like talking to a few people, and maybe there’s a little bit of bitterness that this didn’t happen, but talking to some people out in Boston, talking to some people around the league, they’re not sure how genuine his interest in discussing an extension truly was.
Vegas, again, was his preferred destination, and he ends up going there. And the, the belief is that he’ll eventually Noah Hanifin this whole situation, and sign an extension shortly after.
Maybe this gets pushed off a little bit. But you know, Vegas just didn’t want to mess around in terms of their package.
I think it was a solid return for the guy. You’re getting potentially two first round picks out of this. If not, it’s a first round pick, a second. They have Zach Whitecloud in there.
…
But overall, not surprised by any stretch it’s Vegas. And again, the anticipation is he’ll eventually re-up there, even though he did call Craig Conroy, or at least his agent did on Sunday morning, to say, ‘Hey, look, we’re just not going to go into the extension route with anybody at this time.’
