Elias Pettersson’s agent on his situation in Vancouver

Donnie & Dhali: J.P. Barry, the agent for Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson, on the trade rumors, if he’s happy in Vancouver, and what if he’s approached to waive his no-movement clause.

** NHLRumors.com transcription

Don Taylor: “What do you make of all this talk regarding Elias Patterson possibly being moved by the Vancouver Canucks?”

Barry: “Well, I mean, I take it with a grain of salt, because, I mean, when a team isn’t doing well, then everybody’s going to be discussed. And when we’ve talked about in the past, it’s always hard for us when it’s a player who has a no-move, but that’s the reality of you know where things are when things don’t go well.

NHL Rumors: How Many Goalies Are Available This Trade Season?

So you know for us, we know it’s not real, unless you know the GM is calling us and saying that there’s an actual team or a deal, and would you consider it? So I, you know nine out of 10 times it’s just a rumor.”

Taylor: “Is he happy? He says he is. Is he happy on and off the ice of Vancouver, JP?”

Barry: “Yeah, I think he’s happy. I mean, it’s, no one’s happy when they’re losing. So, I mean, he committed, you know, to be there and try to make the best of it, and he’s going to do that. And I’m sure there’s gonna be all kinds of discussions at the end of this year about every player on that team. So we can’t avoid that.”

Rick Dhaliwal: “JP, if they do come to you and say, ‘Hey, will you waive?’ That’s a decision you and Elias are going to have to, at that time, I guess, start thinking about something.”

Barry: “Yeah, where it gets problematic is when things get public in that area. Like, people think that the player should automatically waive to whoever they want to waive to.

And the reality is that when you, when you have the leverage to have a no-move, like you’re giving up a lot. You know, there’s, there’s, you’re basically purchasing that for sometimes a million dollars or more.

NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks, and the Seattle Kraken

So the player, you know, retains the right to go to a spot that he wants to go to. And it’ll open up that kind of dialogue, but that hasn’t happened yet. And, but yeah, I mean, obviously it has to be a location that works for both sides.”
