NHL Rumors I: Maple Leafs, Flames and Rangers

  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Dave Poulin appeared to know that he would be let go. Claude Loiselle didn’t think he would be let go despite knowing that changes were coming. Talk is that Poulin and Brendan Shanahan didn’t appear to see eye-to-eye right from the start. Some think that Loiselle could take Shanahan’s old position with the NHL.
  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: James Reimer’s new two year deal will take him to unrestricted free agency and makes him more tradable .

“He never said: ‘Get me out of here,’ ” said Nonis. “What he did ask was for us to explore opportunities that would make sense for both sides. We did. I went back to him and said: ‘I don’t have something that I would feel comfortable doing and we prefer to sign you.’ We both felt him coming back was good for us and for him. He wouldn’t have signed a two-year-deal if he didn’t feel comfortable coming back to Toronto.”

  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Bruins Johnny Boychuk will be a UFA at the end of next season, with Shinzawa putting the early money on the Flames.
  • Larry Brooks: If Rangers RFA defenseman John Moore gets a deal around $1 million, and they give the final two forward roster spots to J.T. Miller and Jesper Fast, they could start the season with about $1.3 million in salary cap space.
