The Maple Leafs don’t plan on trading Nylander but teams have called

Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas said yesterday that at the moment he doesn’t want to trade forward William Nylander.

“I’ve been asked: ‘Do you want to trade him right now?’ And the answer is, ‘No,’ ” Dubas told the Star on Friday. “Circumstances can change. But it’s not in any plan or any discussion we’ve had that we’re going to trade any of these players.”

It’s believed that Nylander is looking for $8 million a season with the Maple Leafs coming in around $6 million. Dubas said that agreeing on a long-term number can be difficult.

“With any player coming off of his entry level, it’s always: ‘Is it long term or is it bridge?’

“The long term is where both parties, our camp and their camp, have been focused on,” said Dubas. “Those ones are often the hardest ones to do, because they are a much bigger decision for the player, and a much bigger decision for the team.”

Chris Nichols of Nichols on Hockey: Pierre LeBrun was on TSN 1050 radio yesterday and he mentioned that an offer sheet for Toronto Maple Leafs William Nylander is unlikely as most interested teams are playoff bubble teams and they may not be able to afford to giving up the first and second round picks.

LeBrun adds that the Carolina Hurricanes called the Maple Leafs about Nylander.

“For example, I can tell you that I know the Carolina Hurricanes are among the teams that have phoned of late to check in on William Nylander with the Leafs. Just in case. As they should, by the way. ‘Are you trading him?’ They were told no.

“But they’re not going to offer-sheet him because who’s to say where Carolina is going to finish in the standings this year. Are you going to give away a first, a second, and a third if you sign him for $8.1 million or less?”

The Maple Leafs have the salary cap space for Nylander and are going to match almost anything. Next offseason is when the Maple Leafs are going to have cap issues.
