Offer sheets coming Mitch Marner’s way if he’s not re-signed in time
TSN: Darren Dreger on if Mitch Marner not wanting to negotiate a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the season is going to cause a big problem for the Leafs.
“Yeah, an offer-sheet problem.”
The Maple Leafs appear to be moving closer to getting Auston Matthews signed to an extension.
“Look, teams around the National Hockey League are hoping that Farris is a man of his word and that there is negotiation until the end of the season or July 1st. I can tell you that teams are 100 per cent preparing an offer sheet for Mitch Marner. We’ll see if it gets to that point. And as we’ve known, the Leafs have made it abundantly clear that if it does, they will match.”
Duncan Keith and his No-Trade Clause
TSN: Pierre LeBrun says that the Chicago Blackhawks could approach Duncan Keith about his no-trade clause.
“I find it hard to believe that Duncan Keith would switch teams but I will tell you this, the Hawks will go to him right before the trade deadline and say ‘what do you want to do?’ He has a full no-trade clause. He has a four years left on his deal at $5.5 million. He decides his future. Yes, he’s a legacy player for Chicago, but I think (Blackhawks GM) Stan Bowman and the hierarchy in Chicago will go to him and say ‘What do you want to do?’ Do you want to go to a contender or stay here with the rebuild. That conversation will happen.”
The Jets didn’t like the asking price for Brassard
Chris Nichols of Nichols on Hockey: Darren Dreger on TSN 1290 on what the Winnipeg Jets could be looking to do leading up to the trade deadline.
“I’m confident saying Winnipeg is going to add a forward,” indicated Dreger. “I don’t think there’s any doubt of that. Now, what’s the price for Cheveldayoff and the Winnipeg Jets are willing to spend in acquiring a specific asset.”
The Jets have kicked tires on Pittsburgh Penguins Derick Brassard, but the Penguins wanted someone like Adam Lowry, which the Jets wouldn’t do.
The Jets may wait until closer to the trade deadline to see what else becomes available. If the Senators don’t re-sign Matt Duchene, maybe the Jets give them a call.
