NHL Rumors: Now What for Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings?

Jim Biringer 07/18/2026

Is it too for Dylan Larkin to walk this back and return to the Detroit Red Wings next year? They aren't getting the offers and they can't deal for futures.

Can the Dylan Larkin situation be walked back in Detroit?

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press appeared on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio on Wednesday and was asked about the Dylan Larkin trade situation and whether things have changed now with the news that Steve Yzerman is stepping down as GM.

Who Will Replace Steve Yzerman in Detroit as General Manager?

Host: “How much, and people are going to ask, and they’re going to connect dots, and you understand this question. How much does the Dylan Larkin segment play into this? Or if it doesn’t, as you alluded to right at the start, whoever comes in is going to have to tidy up that situation, aren’t they?”

Helene St. James: “Well, it’s a bad look for the whole organization. But quite frankly, I mean, Dylan. I mean, he’s the one who asked for a trade, and he had a great Olympics. I’ve never seen him happier than on that Sunday they won in Milano. And he’s like, “This is the best feeling I’ve ever had on skates. But he can return to Detroit. He did not carry that team into the playoffs. I mean, part of that blame is on him. So I just think it’s unfortunate. I don’t know if this can be walked back. It’s been two months, and I don’t know if they can pull off a (Zach) Werekenski (Don) Waddell miracle.”

Is the best path for the Red Wings to resolve the Dylan Larkin Situation internally?

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was on the Wednesday edition of NHL Tonight on the NHL Network. There, he was asked about Dylan Larkin and whether there is a way he can now stay in Detroit.

The Timing of the Steve Yzerman Announcement in Detroit is Odd

Tony Luftman: “On the topic of structure, when the ’08 Wings won their cup, and they had the parade on one of those sidewalks, cheering as they rolled by, was Dylan Larkin, who would go on to be Dylan Larkin and wear the C, and no one understands or appreciates that franchise, that history more. And yet, things got sideways clearly between him and Yzerman and he wanted out. What does this mean now for Dylan Larkin? This latest development with Steve Yzerman stepping aside.”

Elliotte Friedman: “The short answer, Tony, is that it’s to be determined, and I think it’s a great question because I think it’s one of the biggest questions. One saying that I really like a lot, Tony, is that you can trade your problem, or you can solve your problem, and it’s always easier to solve your problem.

And we got to a point where, with Dylan Larkin, he and they felt it was time to trade the problem. Maybe it’s going to be different now. I think right now that’s an open-ended question. We learn in broadcasting school, Tony, there are open questions and there are closed questions.

Detroit Red Wings Facing Pivotal Summer Amid Larkin Drama

This is an open question, but at the very least, Tony, I see a world where somebody comes in and takes this job and says, “I want to sit down with Dylan Larkin and see if I can change his mind, and maybe you can sell him on a plan that’s different.

But I think right now that’s uncertain at this point. Like I just think Larkin would like to keep a low profile, and I can’t blame them. But I have to think at some point in time that whoever takes this job is going to want the opportunity to talk to him and say, “Okay, this is a new path. This is a new world. Is there a way that we can solve this problem internally?

Because I think for the Red Wings, that’s the better path.”
