The Hurricanes don’t think they’ll be able to re-sign either goaltender

Tom Gulitti of NHL.com: Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell said yesterday that he doesn’t think he’ll be able to sign either of his unrestricted goaltenders – Petr Mrazek or Curtis McElhinney.

“We’re trying to sign them, but it doesn’t look like we’re going to get either signed,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said Tuesday. “So, if not, we’ll go to the market and see what’s out there for July 1.”

Both goalies will go through the interview process. It is possible that they could circle back to one of them.

“Sometimes guys test the market and then you find where we’re at,” Waddell said.

The Hurricanes are still looking to add some scoring and could deal from their depth on the blue line.

“It’s one of the things that if it’s the right type of forward, we might look at it,” Waddell said of trading a defenseman. “If not, if we don’t do anything in the next week, then maybe it’s through free agency.”

Waddel will meet with Sebastian Aho‘s agent in Vancouver to continue talks. The sides have exchanged offers and are hopeful something will get done.

Forward Justin Williams is still deciding on whether to play next season or not.

Ducks not thinking of long-term effects of Perry buyout

Anaheim Ducks: Ducks GM Bob Murray on how the Corey Perry affects any of his future plans in their upcoming years.

“You can’t go jumping into any long-term deal right now. The further issue is, when we get the cap number tomorrow at the meetings, we’re going to know that stuff and be where we thought it was going to be. A lot of us are going to be scratching our heads as to what we can do. Some teams are in worst shape than we are. One-year deals always work. We’re going to try to surround this young group with a little more oomph. We’re trying to do that, but I don’t know if we can. I’m going to protect them a little bit, and let them grow.”
