The Los Angeles Kings will let the year play out with defenseman Drew Doughty
Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – The picks are in episode, on the Los Angeles Kings and Drew Doughty
“Drew Doughty, that was, that was a big deal that the Kings announced, that they’ll go into next year and see how it goes, and then sort it out after.
I think the Kings are one of the teams that are really interested in (Alexander) Nikishin. So I kind of wondered if, it’s not exactly the same, but if one has something to do with the other.”
NHL Rumors: Bowen Byram and Darnell Nurse
….
Bukauskas: “Can I go back to LA for a sec?”
Friedman: “Sure.”
Bukauskas: “How do you think Doughty feels about all of that? Because it wasn’t a, we don’t see him here beyond next year. It was just, we’re going to wait and see with regards to what potentially the next contract could look like. We’re not going to deal with it now. And we’ve seen other defensemen or other players later on in their career, and it’s kind of year-by-year. They figure it out. But you know, Doughty is
a proud guy, proud guy.”
Friedman: “Proud guy. I got a lot of time for Drew Doughty, a lot of time for him. It’s not, those things are never easy, but I think you have to channel them in the proper way, right? Like, you have to, you know, it was interesting.
So, (Kings GM Ken) Holland was on the second day of the draft coverage with EJ Hradek, and it was interesting. Holland had a really interesting answer about being around a lot of great players, Hall of Famers, late in their careers. And it was.. it was kind of like, I think he was trying to say that, you know, there’s going to have to be a different role here for Doughty, and how does he feel about that?
NHL Rumors: Kraken, Senators, and the Wild
I thought it was a really good answer, but you know, Doughty is a proud guy. It’s, Collin’s, right, like that’s the toughest thing. You have a franchise icon, eventually, you know, Father Time is undefeated, and that doesn’t mean you disrespect the player. But it is a recognition that, you know, both salary and role can change.
They gave Bradt Clark a five times $7.4 (million) which I think will turn out to be a very good deal for the Kings, but that means it’s time for Brant Clarke to take a bigger role”
