Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas comments on contract extensions for Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews.

Dubas on contract extension talks with Matthews

Kristen Shilton of TSN: Contract extension talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews continue.

“With Auston we’ve continued to have very healthy dialogue with  Judd Moldaver and Jeff Jackson,” Dubas said Tuesday.

TSN: Darren Dreger said that a long-term contract extension between the Maple Leafs and Matthews is not imminent or close, but talks continue.

“But as Dubas alerted the media to earlier, yes there has been a good amount of back and forth, including a meeting last week in Toronto where Judd Moldaver, Matthews’s agent, Jeff Jackson, who also represents Auston Matthews, met with Kyle Dubas to discuss some conceptual ideas and that could be in term, maybe it’s a five-year term or the eight-year maximum. The fact they are going back to back and continuing to talk is progressive.”

Dubas on contract extension talks with Marner

Kristen Shilton of TSN: Maple Leafs GM Dubas didn’t have much to say with regards to Mitch Marner’s pending free agent status.

“And when it comes to Mitch, Darren Ferris has been very overt in his stance on it publicly. When we have a further update, we’ll be letting everyone know.”

Ferris reiterated to Pierre LeBrun several weeks ago that they are focusing on the season and will worry about a contract until after the season.

“Those are very big personal decisions for those players. It’s a life-changing decision,” Dubas said. “Yes, it would selfishly for me be beneficial , but for the players they have to make sure they’re fully comfortable going into any arrangement when they’re fully happy and ready to do so.”
