Dan Rosen: Capitals GM Brian MacLellan indicated that the Hurricanes offered the No. 42 pick for Philipp Grubauer and presumably Brooks Orpik. The Capitals took the No. 47 pick from the Avalanche so that he wasn’t in the same division.
On the New York Islanders …
Pierre LeBrun: The Islanders never offered either of their first round picks for Grubauer as Lou Lamorielo wasn’t willing to do so for Grubauer. The Capitals would have asked for one of them and would have move Grubauer without including Orpik.
On Washington Capitals and John Carlsson …
Dan Rosen: (late last night) A contract extension could get done in the next 24 hours.
Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Capitals GM Brian MacLellan said last night that they are getting “really close” to signing pending unrestricted free agent defenseman John Carlsson to a contract extension. MacLellan hopes to get Carlson locked up before he’s able to speak with teams on Sunday.
“We’re going to do our best to sign John, we’ve said it all along,” MacLellan said. “We waited until the end of the year. We’ve had discussions. We’re close, and hopefully we can close the deal here in the next 24 hours.”
The Capitals cleared about $7 million yesterday be trading Brooks Orpik and Philipp Grubauer to the Avalanche.
The Caps now have about $21 million in salary cap space and need to re-sign Carlson, Michal Kempny, and Tom Wilson.
Pending RFAs include Devante Smith-Pelly, Travis Boyd and Madison Bowey.
Pending UFAs include Jay Beagle, Alex Chiasson and Jakub Jerabek.
