The Anaheim Ducks have traded forward Andrew Cogliano to the Dallas Stars for forward Devin Shore.

The 31-year old Cogliano was drafted 25th overall in the 2005 draft by the Edmonton Oilers. He carries a $3.25 million salary cap hit for another two seasons.

The 24-year old Shore was drafted 61st overall in the 2012 draft by the Dallas Stars. He carries a $2.3 million salary cap hit with one year left.

Matthew DeFranks: Stars GM Jim Nill on Cogliano: “Great speed type of player, he’s on the puck fast. The pace of the game that he brings is something that you can never have enough of.”

David Pagnotta: Nill: “In acquiring Andrew, we are able to add a conscientious player who brings a veteran-presence to our room. His explosive speed, 200-foot game and iron-man mentality will help our team both on and off the ice.”

Thoughts from the media

Josh Lile: “They want speed and attacking. They can release the pressure on Faksa. Shore is bad. Shore was also making not a ton less. This is fine.”

Josh Lile: “If Cogliano can stay upright he’s more useful than Shore has been. Shore has been detrimental for at least two years.”

Josh Lile: “Cogliano will help quite a bit. He releases pressure off of Faksa who is getting TORCHED nightly.”

Sean Shapiro: “Interesting part of this trade: Shore has better goals/point totals. Cogliano has better underlying offensive numbers.”

Micah McCurdy: “To be honest I like it for both clubs.”

Will Scouch: “Still, core issues in Anaheim remain the same. Their D is far too passive on their side of the red line, they seem to make awful decisions when they get the puck back, and they have a, slow, heavy, and expensive core at F that gets left behind when the play flips.”

Will Scouch: “On the other hand, I think Cogliano is a better fit in Dallas, but this sounds like another deal this year where teams are trying to “shake things up”, with Dallas sounding like the more desperate team.”

Stars get offence from Cogliano, who drives play but can’t finish recently; Ducks get Shore who has a shutdown profile and kills a lot of penalties. pic.twitter.com/IMeOPaUUPW
