Rumors and Video: Coaching and GM Positions

  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: The Bruins are down to four finalists for their vacant GM position. The Rangers are not granting teams permission to talk to assistant GM Jeff Gorton. Ray Shero was of interest, but he’s been hired by the Devils. Signs are still pointing towards Don Sweeney a their next GM. It may be a major upset if Sweeney wasn’t named GM.
  • Darren Dreger: It’s believed the Maple Leafs have contacted Guy Boucher about the head coaching position. Boucher was on TSN 1050 and said a NHL team had contacted him.
  • Toronto Sun: Guy Boucher has been coaching in Switzerland told TSN that he’s “definitely” interested in returning to North America.

“If I fit, it would certainly interest me,” Boucher said about a move down the road, “but like I said, it has to be in the right situation because I have a very good situation right now. I’ve been approached (by an NHL team), so it’s a possibility.”

    “We’ll see what happens.”

  • Darren Dreger: Told that the Maple Leafs would like to talk with Rangers assistant GM Jeff Gorton.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers GM Glen Sather on teams asking for permission to speak with Jeff Gorton about vacant GM positions.

“I haven’t given permission to anybody to speak to anyone and I won’t as long as we’re playing,” Rangers GM Glen Sather told The Post following the club’s morning skate preceding Monday’s Game 3 against the Capitals. “And there’s a question whether I would, anyway, after it’s over.”

Gorton has a year left on his deal and is invaluable to the Rangers, dealing with agents in contract talks and overseeing their salary cap. Gorton would be a top candidate to replace Sather if moved on from the GM role.

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland on his drive with Mike Babcock.

“We talked about his situation, and now, we need a little time — I’m going to use the word ‘stew’ — to stew over what we talked about,” Holland told the Free Press today. “Then, in a few days, we’ll talk again. And eventually, that will lead to some decision. I don’t have a handicap on the situation. We drove over and back, had a nice talk.”

Holland said he would “give myself the month of May and hope it’s concluded by then — or close to it.” He leaves Saturday for the Czech Republic to catch the world championships.
