Rumors: Green, Jets, Wings, Sharks, Oilers, Blues and Sabres
  • Darren Dreger: There is still lots of time for the Capitals and Mike Green to work on a contract extension, but there has been little contact so far.

“Mike is playing exceptionally well this season under Barry Trotz and is a very valuable part of our team and our organization,” Capitals GM Brian MacLellan told The Dreger Report. “Per club policy, we don’t comment on player negotiations, but we are very happy with the way Mike is playing right now.”

The Wings would be one of the teams interested if he becomes available.

  • Craig Custance of ESPN: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff started reaching out to teams last week about potential trades. The trade market is quiet at the moment as teams are still looking at their own players and some are tight against the cap. The Jets were active this summer and were getting calls on players like Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien and Evander Kane. They may not be looking for picks and prospects. They Jets may be looking for a hockey deal. If they were to move Kane, they would be looking for a talented player in the his early 20’s that would be able to play right away.Mailbag: Justin Abdelkader has more trade value right now than Darren Helm. Helm could be a trade option the Wings, and a team like the Oilers could use a player like Helm behind Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

The Sharks won’t make a trade that involves giving up young assets. If there is a trade out there where Sharks GM Doug Wilson could get a young forward with some term left on his contract, he could make a move.

  • The Fourth Period: Oilers Jeff Petry is still on the trade block. Several teams have contacted the Oilers about Nail Yakupov and Jordan Eberle, but nothing is imminent. The Oilers are still wanting to address their center position and add a top-pairing defenseman. They are still interested in Sabres Tyler Myers, but the asking price is too high.
  • Nichols on Hockey: Elliotte Friedman on 630 CHED radio on the Blues.

“And I just think that quietly it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he’s looking at some of his forwards – even some of the guys that have been around and saying, ‘If we wanted to do this, what could we get?’ And if the answer to what we could get is what he thinks might be what has kept them from winning, I think he’s going to have a big decision to make. That’s a team that even though they’ve got a higher salary, it’s not an owner who really is as wealthy as some of the other guys around the National Hockey League.

“I think he knows he’s got a window here with this group and they want to take advantage of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the piece that he really thinks he needs, if maybe one of the veteran forwards goes somewhere.”

    On Patrik Berglund

“I mean, Berglund’s name has been out there. I know, like last year, I believe both Kesler and Garrison were approached about going to St. Louis and wouldn’t waive their no-trades for those particular situations. And I know that Vancouver liked Berglund. So I think there was some potential in the air there.”

On the host mentioning the Blues wanted a first round pick for Berlund.

“I believe it. I mean, they should ask high. And they traded some of their No. 1s for Miller last year so I wouldn’t be surprised. But like I said, I know that Vancouver likes Berglund. I know that there was some talk last summer with Kesler and Garrison. They wouldn’t waive to go there. I wouldn’t be surprised if that kind of a thing was discussed.”

  • Nichols on Hockey: Elliotte Friedman on CHED 630 on the Sabres.

“I still think Ottawa is interested in Chris Stewart. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a potential match.

“Stafford, I do also think that Stafford has a good chance of getting traded. I know at times they’ve talked about him with Minnesota. I believe, actually, a couple of years ago they talked about a Stafford for Setoguchi deal that didn’t go anywhere when Setoguchi was still a member of the Wild.”

    On Mikhail Grigorenko

“And what he said to me was at the end of the day, if you have a 20-year-old centre and he’s in the American Hockey League and he’s showing you something, as Grigorenko is, you’re probably not giving up on him that quickly.

“Now I think Tim Murray is the kind of guy who would trade anybody if he got the right offer. Like, he’s a guy who’s willing to listen. But I do think the chances that Grigorenko gets dealt are much less likely than I thought a year ago at this point in time.”
