Rumors II: Coyotes and Bruins
  • Sarah McLellan of the AZ Republic: A puck-moving defenseman would be on the Coyotes wish list, but it’s doubtful that GM Don Maloney will make any changes to his roster before training camp.

“There are still a lot of players out there,” Maloney said Thursday. “If anything, I can see maybe some tryouts coming our way. The good thing for us we still have roster flexibility. We have some payroll flexibility, but I’m just adamant not to shore up a roster with any more one-way contracts unless it’s a very good deal.”

The Coyotes could also be interested in a another winger, but they may be more interested in a mobile defenseman, and Maloney is watching the market.

“We’re still talking, more kicking tires,” Maloney said.

Brandon Gormley accepted the Coyotes one-year, two-way qualifying offer.

  • Craig Morgan: Coyotes GM Don Maloney on Brandon Gormley: “He’s at a stage where it’s ether fish or cut bait, to be honest.”

Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Bruins GM Don Sweeney admitted they have spoken with defenseman Marek Zidlicky, to go along with Cody Franson and Christian Ehrhoff. The 38-year old Zidlicky would help their power play and would give them another offensive defenesman. The Bruins are one of the five or six teams that Franson has spoken with recently. There could also be the trade options – Brent Seabrook, Dustin Byfuglien and Keith Yandle – but those may be closer to the start of the regular season, if at all.

“Collectively I think our forward group from our top line to our bottom line is a better group ,” said B’s President Cam Neely. “I think you can expect more balanced scoring than we’ve seen in the past. As everybody talks about on our back end, we’re a little young. But we have some cap space, and we’re willing to use it if we feel like it will improve the team.”

The Bruins currently have about $4 million in cap space.
