Rumors II: Coyotes, Kings, Maple Leafs, Canucks and Bylsma
  • Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic: Uncertainty over next years salary cap and the term left on some contracts are leading some teams to be more cautious with regards to the trade market.

“There’s a lot of teams that would love to make deals,” Coyotes GM Don Maloney said. “It’s just finding the match.”

“I don’t know if there’s an ability to shake it loose unless you get teams very desperate to do something,” he said.

  • The Fourth Period: The Maple Leafs are thought to be dangling winger Joffrey Lupul. Cody Franson and James Reimer could also be available. Nazem Kadri could be available, but they would want to package him with something to upgrade down the middle. It’s thought that the Leafs would look to make a trade before making a coaching change.
  • The Fourth Period: The Kings now have just over $4 million in cap space after getting relief from the Slava Voynov situation. The Kings would like to add a No. 2 or 3 defenseman. They have been getting calls on Mike Richards, but it is unclear if he is still available after they received the salary cap relief. Two league executives have told the Fourth Period that to get a top-tier defenseman, they would need to trade a “solid roster player.” The Kings won’t trade Tanner Pearson or Tyler Toffoli. An Eastern Conference executive said that they could package Valentin Zykov and Adrian Kempe.
  • David Pagnotta: “Addressing this because I’ve seen multiple messages: No, Leafs fans. The team won’t trade Phaneuf for Mike Richards. Ditto for the Kings. Let’s put it this way: Phaneuf is not untradeable (note: he has limited NMC). But factor in his contract and who replaces those minutes. If Leafs move one of their “name” guys, everything I’ve heard leads me to believe Lupul (factor contract, too) is the guy. But we’ll see.
  • Matthew Sekeres: Wonders with the Dan Hamhuis injury, if the Canucks will inquire about Sabres Tyler Myers.
  • Craig Custance: Dan Bylsma said that he hasn’t spoken with a team about any potential jobs yet. Custance wonders how much longer that will be the case.
