Rumors III: Sharks, Stars, Oilers, Flyers, Kings, Habs, Sens and Pens
  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: A couple of people said that they heard that Sharks GM Doug Wilson had reached out to Dan Bylsma. Wilson strongly denied: “Tell whoever you want to tell that’s not true,” he said.

Friedman wonders if the message to Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau in the offseason should have been:

“Look, we’re going to start turning over the roster. Come to camp, see what you think, and, if it doesn’t look good to you, would you consider giving us a list of places you’d be willing to go?”

Stars GM Jim Nill is likely done with his defense unless he can find a top guy who can play 25 minutes.

Saturday night it was thought the Oilers had no interest in moving any of their core players. On Monday, word was that “everyone” could become available. They badly want to make a trade.

Friedman thinks the Oilers have already looked at bringing Kyle Brodziak back, though he has no confirmation.

Flyers GM Ron Hextall may be looking to make a move as well: “We didn’t have enough guys that competed hard enough, that showed enough urgency throughout the game.”

The Kings and Alec Martinez have touched base. Other teams are getting the sense that he will re-sign. One executive thinks it could be similar to Jake Muzzin’s $4 million cap hit.

  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: The Canadiens have been interested in David Perron in the past.

The Penguins are looking for wingers.

The Senators could be too, especially if they have given up hope on re-signing Marc Methot, who’d be perfect in Edmonton. Source quieted that by saying the Senators are looking to add size.

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: With the extra cap relief the Kings got from the Slava Voynov situation, GM Dean Lombardi doesn’t plan on just blowing it.

“I think we’re OK right now in terms of numbers,” he said. “The other thing, it’s not just we’re going to go out and blow the cap space to blow it. It still has to be the right guy.”

“There’s two different issues. Do we need to call anybody up from the minors, whether it’s Schultz or Bodnarchuk? I don’t think we need to do that now. Secondly, as far as the idea of replacing Voynov, it’s not like you get the cap space and there’s something there right away. Let’s get real. Finding top-four defensemen, they’re not available. Because a lot of times to be able to do that you’d better have a guy to replace him because top-four guys are so important to each other’s teams.

“Again, we’re 20 games in and who can make that type of arrangement? I don’t see it. But you never know.”
