Rumors IV: Bruins, Jackets, Sharks, Flames, Hawks, Sabres and Oilers
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: (mailbag) If the Jets were to move Evander Kane to Boston, it would cost a good roster player, and prospects and/or picks.

It’s possible the Oilers could move Jordan Eberle if they get a top pairing defenseman, a top two center, goaltender or any other major pieces that they feel are missing from their current mix of players. Not sure if the Bruins would do a package that the Oilers would be interested in. Malcolm Subban and Ryan Spooner might be players that would interest in the Oilers. The Oilers management likes Milan Lucic, but Haggerty doesn’t see the Bruins moving him. It’s more likely the Bruins would move Loui Eriksson over Reilly Smith.

Chris Stewart could become a fallback for the Bruins, but he’s disappeared in Buffalo this season.

Nick Foligno in Columbus could be a nice fit for the Bruins. He’ll be a UFA at the end of the season.

In past season, GM Peter Chiarelli wouldn’t involve Subban in trade talks, and there is nothing to suggest that has changed.

  • Hope Smoke: Nick Kypreos: “I hear it’s ugly in SJ. I heard they’re not all on the same page. Decision to strip C hasn’t sat well in that room” … “They have a really good coach there & I hear teams are paying close attention and willing to swoop in if he’s fired”
  • Craig Custance of ESPN: Flames GM Brad Treliving last week when asked about their early success this season and what it might mean when the trade deadline gets closer.

“We’re always looking to make better, but we’re not going to give up young assets, long-term assets for something that’s going to help us for two weeks,” he said. “We’re still looking at this as taking a long-term view. That’s not going to change.”

It’s sounding like Brandon Saad (RFA) will wait until the season is over before they start contract talks.

“We haven’t gotten anything done there, but he’s a big part of where we’re going,” Bowman said. “He just turned 22 and he’s already won a Cup with us, and he’s sort of emerging as the next mainline player for us. We’ll figure that one out.”

“We feel we’ll wait until the season is over,” said his agent, Lewis Gross, when we chatted before the weekend. “Let’s let the season pass and try and sit down and get something done.”

  • Kevin Allen of USA Today: Five players to keep an eye on as the trade deadline approaches.1. Nick Foligno – the Blue Jackets will try to re-sign him. He could become a rental if they can’t get a deal done and if the Blue Jackets remain out of the playoff hunt.2. Drew Stafford – size and scoring could attract a contender. Has been inconsistent.

    3. David Perron – Oilers looking for center, but may need to package with more to get a good one.

    4. Jeff Petry – there was more talk about a trade earlier in the season than there is now. A right-handed shot.

    5. Chris Stewart – has good size, but teams haven’t been impressed when they’ve scouted him.
