Rumors IV: Marleau, Martinez, Markstrom, Wings and Buyout Candidates
  • Dennis Bernstein: (answering questions) It’s more likely that the Sharks trade Patrick Marleau next summer when he’s entering the last year of his deal.
  • Dennis Bernstein: (answering question) The Kings might have to move Alec Martinez before the start of the season.
  • News 1130 SportsJacob Markstrom on the trade talk: “Gonna be an interesting few days, it can’t effect me, I’m working out, come back for next year wherever that is.”
  • Michael Traikos: Hearing that the Red Wings are not interested in trading for Dion Phaneuf and are not looking for a defenseman in free agency. They are thinking that Xavier Ouellet, Ryan Sproul and Alexey Marchenko could fill the void.
  • Adam Gretz of CBS Sports: Gretz looking at which teams could consider using a buyout and if it makes sense for them.

Hurricanes – Alexander Semin – three years, $21 million, $7 million cap hit: Doesn’t make sense for the Hurricanes. A $2.3 million cap hit through 2021. Can still be useful (not $7 million useful) and they might be able to move him if they take back another bad contract.

Flyers – Vincent Lecavalier – three years, $13.5 million, $4.5 million cap hit: Makes sense for the Flyers. Still trying to trade him. Would save the Flyers $2 million a year.Penguins – Rob Scuderi – two years, $5.7 million, $3.75 million cap hit: GM Jim Rutherford has said they don’t have any plans on using a buyout.

Sabres – Cody Hodgson – four years, $19 million, $4.25 million cap hit: Probably makes sense for the Sabres. Since he’s under 26, buyout is only 1/3 of his salary. Cap hit would be $800,000 through 2023.

Blue Jackets – David Clarkson – five years, $25.9 million, $5.25 million – Buyout doesn’t really make sense as contract is pretty much buyout proof.

Kings – Mike Richards – five years, $22 million, $5.75 million – Buyout probably doesn’t make sense. Would still be costly for them.

Red Wings – Stephen Weiss – three years, $16 million – A buyout would make sense. Would save the Red Wings between $2 and $3 million over the next three years, $1.6 million for the next three.
