On the Winnipeg Jets …

  • Dan Rosen of NHL.com: (mailbag) On what the Jets could expect to get in return if they traded Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd before the trade deadline, and on if anyone would want to take both if the Jets take back salary, or retain salary.Rosen thinks the Jets would want prospects and draft picks over NHL players. A player-for-player deal is possible, though unlikely as Byfuglien and Ladd could just be rentals. Would think the Jets would like to continue talking contract extension with one or both before they hit the trade market.

Why wouldn’t a team be interested in both players? The return would be bigger if the Jets retained some salary, and it would come off the books at the end of the season.

  • ESPN: Scott Burnside: With the playoffs looking like a long-shot for the Jets, the pressure will be on GM Kevin Cheveldayoff to get the most assets in return for Byfuglien and Ladd if they aren’t re-signed soon.Craig Custance: If Byfuglien and Ladd don’t have a contract by the trade deadline, the Jets have to trade them. It may not be a bad thing for the Jets in the long run. Byfuglien is tough to replace, but he’d bring the biggest return.
  • Chris Nichols: Darren Dreger said that Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff “is not going to trade Trouba or Scheifele – at least I don’t get that sense.” If the Jets were interested in trading Jacob Trouba, a Travis Hamonic trade would have been done already.
  • Chris Nichols: Dreger: “When push comes to shove, I feel like they’re going to get a deal done w/ Andrew Ladd. I do.” (Contract, not trade…) …. “It feels like Ladd isn’t going anywhere. I think they’re going to get that deal done. But Byfuglien – it’s too quiet.”
