Rumors: Marleau – Rangers, Ducks and Kings

On the Sharks …

  • Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area: A source is saying that Patrick Marleau would accept a trade to the Rangers, Ducks and Kings if a deal could be worked out.The Rangers have sent scout to the past two Sharks games. Doug Risebrough was at their game last night.

It’s not known if Marleau is pushing for a move or if the Sharks initiated it.
Marleau is in the second year of a three year, $20 million contract. He has a no-movement clause.

  • Bob McKenzie: “It is less likely SJ asked Marleau to waive NTC and more likely that Marleau asked SJ to explore trade possibilities to select teams.”
  • Bob McKenzie of TSN: Some teams have known since early in the season (possibly as early as training camp) that under the right circumstances, that Marleau may look for a trade. Some executives were surprised the story had not come out sooner.

Looking at the three teams that Marleau listed – California rivals Ducks and Kings are not normally trading partners for the Sharks. The Kings would have trouble fitting Marleau’s $6.7 million cap hit in.

Reports from Anahein are this it would be a difficult trade for the Ducks to make.

The Rangers haven’t shown significant interest in Marleau and may have trouble with his cap number as well.

There has been some unconfirmed rumors that his trade list could expand, if it hasn’t happened already. Some executives think the Blackhawks and Predators could also be approved teams.

  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “I believe the Sharks would be absolutely interested provided the return is fair” … “my sources in NY were caught a but off guard ” … “it appears that this was initiated by Marleau, not that he asked for a trade but that’s he’s interested”
  • Darren Dreger: Marleau will work with CAA Sports and Patt Brisson, who he retained during training camp.
