Rumors VII: Dreger on Cam Talbot and Interested Teams

Dreger on TSN Radio this morning on Cam Talbot and interested teams.

On Cam Talbot:

“Well, atleast 6 teams are pretty interested in Cam Talbot, three of them very interested. At the top of that list is the Edmonton Oilers and we know that it’s high priority for Peter Chiarelli to acquire a goaltender and he set his sights on Cam Talbot. Not sure yet what the return would be but the Rangers are motivatd to move and they don’t have to. He’s got another year at a very good number under contract so there’s no sense of urgency here. He’s a 27 year old, but if the return is solid enough then absolutely the Rangers are going to trade him. I mean absolutely in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes down this weekend or before the draft next week. But the Rangers are still doing a little fishing here. They’ve got Buffalo showing interest, the San Jose Sharks showing interest and limited interest from a few curious teams. Dallas is somewhat interested, the Florida Panthers with Roberto Luongo have expressed some interest and Brad Treliving from the Calgary Flames has expressed some interest. Cam Talbot is the hot commodity right now and then beyond that you look at Robin Lehner or Craig Anderson from the Ottawa Senators and Eddie Lack from the Vancouver Canucks as potentially on the move as well.”

What are Rangers asking for for Cam Talbot and is there a buyer beware due to how good Rangers defence is:

“Right, but he still had to stop the puck. They’re not bullet proof. They’re very good, there’s no question and that should be considered, and it is but you know, everybody believed that the NYR were going to plummet back down to earth when Henrik Lundqvist went out for an extended period of time with injury and Cam Talbot absolutely shut the door and gave them grade A quality goaltending and I think that opened the eyes of many and from a development perspective you know as I said he’s 27 and traditionally when you’re looking for a goaltender who could be a number 1, that’s kind of the age where you’re looking at in determining you know “Has he turned the corner developmentally where we’re getting sound goaltending but we haven’t yet seen a ceiling but unlikely he’s going backwards”. And usually in that 26-28 year range is where the experts say you start to realize that. So buyer beware I suppose but I’m sure that Peter Chiarelli and Tim Murray and the other GMs who are expressing interest have done enough scouting on Cam Talbot to be sure that he’s going to be a very good goalie and it’ll take what? You know, a good young player, a prospect, or a draft pick. It always seems to be that combination. Either 2 or 3 depending on the quality and what you’re looking at getting back for him”
