  • David Pagnotta: Two sources saying that the Hurricanes have been looking to trade Alex Semin for a while and are willing to retain a “significant portion” of his contract.
  • Steve Simmons: Before the Blues Jackets-Leafs did their Nathan Horton – David Clarkson trade, the Maple Leafs thought they had a similar type deal with another team, but it fell through.
  • Kid Ish: Darren Dreger said on the radio that he thinks Red Wings coach Mike Babcock might want to return to Anaheim: “He would disown his son for Getzlaf.”
  • Andy Strickland: There are multiple teams interested in Sabres Chris Stewart. A team says they are waiting on the Sabres to pull the trigger.
  • Mike Halford: Blue Jackets trade target Matt Calvert is out indefinitely with a concussion.
  • Chad Graff: The Wild put Stephane Veilleux on waivers, which gives them one more roster spot for flexibility with the trade deadline approaching.
  • Nichols on Hockey: Elliotte Friedman on 630 CHED on Leafs potential moves.

“To me the interesting one is Phaneuf. I had one team tell me this morning the Maple Leafs are unwilling at this point in time to take money back in the Phaneuf deal, in terms of keeping any of his salary. They would necessarily take a contract back, but they weren’t willing to keep any of Phaneuf’s salary.

“If that changes over the next two or three days, I could see Phaneuf going. If you could get Phaneuf down to being a team – I do think Detroit would take a run at him if they knew it wasn’t costing them $7 million a year and if maybe they took one of Detroit’s contracts away like a Weiss or a Kindl, if not both.

“If they want to work that out, I think there’s a deal to be made there.”
