Trade: Maple Leafs Send Daniel Winnik to Pittsburgh

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Daniel Winnik to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2016 2nd round, 2015 4th round pick and Zach Sill.

The 29-year old Winnik was drafted 265th of the 9th round of the 2004 draft by the Coyotes. He carries a $1.3 million cap hit.

The 26-year old Sill was undrafted and carries a $550,000 cap hit

James Mirtle: The Maple Leaf will retain half of Winnik’s salary.

Scott Wheeler: “Zach Sill is a depth AHL player and nothing more. Getting two picks within the first four rounds for a rental is smart, smart management.”

Pierre LeBrun: “Sill was included in deal to help make money work for Pittsburgh but Leafs want to take a look at him down stretch as well. He’s UFA July 1″

Paul Hendrick: “Sill will provide Leafs with some grit. The man likes to hit and he won’t hesitate to drop the gloves.”

Anthony Petrielli: “Won’t seem like a big deal to fans but things like taking on Jokinen, Sill & retaining $ is how Leafs are getting good picks. Flexing muscle.”

James Mirtle: “Zach Sill is a pending UFA who turns 27 in May. Probably just a dumped contract, like Jokinen.”

Seth Rorabaugh: “Winnik can play multiple forward positions. It’s been an emphasis under Rutherford. Spaling, Comeau, Perron. Even Arcobello.”

Will DePaoli: “Winnik fits a clear need in bottom-6, but at end of day will be a low impact trade when your 3rd, 4th line centers remain Sutter/Lapierre”

Was this a good trade for the Penguins? Was it a good deal for the Maple Leafs?
