Trade: Predators Send Derek Roy To Oilers For Mark Arcobello

The Edmonton Oilers have traded center Mark Arcobello to the Nashville Predators for center Derek Roy.

Roy had cleared waivers earlier today.

The 31-year old Roy was drafted 32nd overall in the second round of the 2001 draft by the Sabres. Roy carries a $1 million cap hit and will be a UFA at the end of the season.

The 26-year old Arcobello was undrafted. He carries a $600,000 salary cap hit and will be a RFA at the end of the season.

Elliotte Friedman: There was no salary retained in the trade.

Joe Yerdon: “Oilers were at 47 or 48 contracts. If they just grabbed Roy off waivers, it would’ve put them perilously close to 50 contract limit.”

Ryan Rishaug: Once the Oilers claimed Matt Fraser off waivers earlier today, they needed to trade a contract for Roy instead of claiming him off waivers.

Mark Spector: “Actually, have to say, smart move to get Roy and move Arcobello’s contract. Roy struggling, but Arco is an AHL player, plain and simple.”

Adam Proteau: “Watching the Oilers make these minor trades is like watching Monty Python’s Black Knight request a toothpick & toe bandage for his injuries.”
