Trade: Sharks Send Demers and Pick to Stars for Dillon

The San Jose Sharks have traded defenseman Jason Demers and a 2016 3rd round pick to the Dallas Stars for defenseman Brenden Dillon.

  • San Jose Sharks: Sharks GM Doug Wilson: “We were looking for a big left-shot defenseman who is going to trend up. We’re very excited to get Brenden.” … “This was a good hockey deal. It’s a trade where both teams got what they wanted and needed.”
  • Chris Johnston: The Sharks are retaining 35 percent of Demers’ contract.

Demers’ is in the first year of a two-year, $6.8 million deal. He has a salary of $3.15 million this year and $3.65 million next year.

Dillon signed a one-year, $1.25 million deal this offseason, and will be a RFA at seasons end.

  • Mark Stepneski: Stars GM Jim Nill

“There’s been a lot of talk about our back end. We’ve got to get better and lot of what we’ve been talking about is lefties and righties. It was an opportunity for both San Jose and us. We were looking for a righty and they were looking for a lefty. We had to sit down and figure some things out and we figured these two players were a good fit. Jason is a good young player. He’s only two years older than Brenden, so we are not losing anything on age. We are getting a right-shot. He’s a good puck mover. As we’ve seen with Klingberg, we’ve got to get our back end more mobile, moving pucks better. I think Jason is going to help us do that.”

  •  Mark Stepneski: Demers should arrive in Dallas tonight and is expected to be in the lineup tomorrow against the Kings.

Thoughts from the media:

  • Dobber: “Sorry, San Jose made off like bandits in that deal. Demers is a Band-Aid Boy with mediocre upside. Dillon hits and blocks among the best. 3rd round pick doesn’t make up for that gap IMO.”
  • Anthony Petrielli: “Dillon’s 2 years younger & has a career 21:06/game average driving play vs. tough comp. Demers has never averaged 20min/game in 6 seasons.”
  • Gus Katsaros: “wonder if there were any lingering effects over contract negotiations on the Stars part to facilitate this deal too.”
  • Nicholas Goss: “I don’t understand that trade from Dallas’ perspective. Brenden Dillon is a quality D-man with a bright future.”
  • Daniel Friedman: “I like that trade for Dallas. Demers is an upgrade over Dillon, and a much needed top-four caliber defenseman.”
  • Scott Cullen: “Really like that deal for San Jose. Dillon doesn’t produce points, but can hold his own in tough minutes.”
