Video and Quotes: Senators GM Bryan Murray Talking Deadline
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators GM Bryan Murray on the trade deadline.

“You get caught up in it, like every GM does,” said Murray, now in his 22nd year as an NHL GM and his eighth with the Senators. “You make a lot of calls and you wonder about making even a lateral move, which, watching the trades (Tuesday), a lot of them are lateral moves.

“I talked about it (Sunday) with our professional scouts. I told them to get ready to do your lists, your ratings of players, because we’re probably not going to do much, if anything, and that’s sort of the way it worked out.”

Murray was hoping to move out a Dman, and he thought he had a deal.

“We have eight defencemen and I did talk about one and I thought we had something going on at the very end (before the deadline), but the other team couldn’t get it done on their end,” Murray said.

Their budget may force Murray to make some moves in the offseason.

“We have a little bit of a veteran situation that going into the summer we’ll try to do something with, just because of our budget,” said Murray. “I was looking to move a player or two but that didn’t happen. If you’re a (salary) cap team, you’ve got to trade money for money and I didn’t want to do that, in one case in particular.”

  • Ian Mendes: Senators GM Bryan Murray said that he got calls for Erik Condra, but he opted to keep him as he is well liked. Needs to decide what to do with the pending UFA.
