Darnell Nurse asking for a trade now makes, and will the Edmonton Oilers need to attach an asset to move the defenseman?
Jay On SC: Ryan Rishaug when asked why is now the time that Darnell Nurse requested a trade and what type of return the Oilers could get for him.

Jay Onrait: “We’re shocked to talk about this situation. Ryan, simply put, why is this happening right now?”
Rishaug: “Well, Jay, I think this is mutual between the two sides, right? I’ve really gotten the sense that the Edmonton Oilers were potentially going to be approaching Darnell Nurse to see if he’d be willing to waive that no-trade. And I think the point that Darnell Nurse and his camp make with this is that, yes, the time has come.
The Edmonton Oilers Interest in Mike Babcock Seems to be Ownership Driven
The thing to know here is that he’s got a full no-move right now, so he controls this situation right now. That changes next year. He’s got a 10-team list next year, and he loses some of that control. So, if this situation is coming to an end, it would make sense that Nurse wants to get ahead of it while he can control the process a little bit more.”
Onrait: “Ryan, top 4D men don’t come on the market very often, but this is a guy with a captain of over $9 million for the next four seasons. So what do you see the return for the Oilers looking like here?
Rishaug: “Yeah, you know, it’s a great question. I think a lot of people would automatically assume that they would have to attach an asset to Darnell Nurse because of that salary to move him on, or take a really bad contract in return.
I’m not quite as convinced. I can’t help but think the Oilers might be able to get, you know, a decent return here for Darnell Nurse. This guy plays over 20 minutes, you know, a night. He is nothing but healthy, I mean, the last four seasons he’s barely missed any time at all.
And I know he’s not the perfect player, and I know that his salary at over $9 million is heavy. But if the Oilers are willing to retain a little bit on that salary, I do think they could get a decent return here for Darnell Nurse.
Three Teams That Darnell Nurse Would Okay a Trade Too, and Some Oilers Fallout
I don’t believe this is going to be one of those ones where you have to strap a high draft pick or something to his back to get him to move. I think there is a hockey trade here to be made with the right combination of retaining salary and, of course, bringing the right asset back.
