MacKinnon scored an NHL-best 53 goals last season. Makar continues to drive play from the blue line, giving Colorado a transition weapon few teams can match. The Avalanche scored a league-high 298 goals, which creates a high baseline for a club that can win games in multiple ways.
Colorado also defended at an elite level. It allowed 197 goals, the fewest in the NHL, while Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood shared the William Jennings Trophy. Repeating that goaltending performance stands as the key variable. The Avalanche do not need either goalie to become a superstar, but they need consistent health and stable results behind a high-powered roster.
Jaden Schwartz joined the forward group, adding an experienced winger with a history of producing in important games. Colorado also added Fedor Svechkov and Zachary L’Heureux, giving the club more options around a core that already includes MacKinnon and Makar.

McDavid remains the central reason Edmonton belongs among the top five. He won another Art Ross Trophy last season and continues to drive one of the league’s most explosive attacks. Draisaitl gives the Oilers a second elite centerpiece, and the club can still overwhelm opponents when its power play finds rhythm.
The organization made a major coaching change by hiring Mike Babcock. Edmonton will need the new staff to sharpen its five-on-five defending and establish greater consistency across an 84-game season. The Oilers cannot rely solely on their top-end skill in the Western Conference.
