Free agent rumor and notes: Shea Weber, Mike Green, Shane Doan, Mike Modano and Kris Versteeg

  • Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Yesterday was the deadline to accept qualifying offers, but Shea Weber and the Predators agreed to extend it until August 1st. This allows both sides flexibility as they can continue to negotiate. Accepting the qualifying offer means they are not able to discuss a contract extension until the New Year.
  • Brian McNally of the Washington Examiner: Capitals defenseman Mike Green declined the teams qualifying offer of $5 million. Green had until 5 pm yesterday to accept the offer. Contract discussions with Green’s agent, Craig Oster, will continue, and according to once source, they’ve been going well.

“I think when you’re sort of negotiating in good faith and trying to get it done. I don’t think anybody’s trying to squeeze anybody on the other side,” McPhee said on Saturday. “And so in some ways an artificial deadline. I think we’ve had healthy discussions with both players and there are deals to be made there…I think that’s something we’ll get done sooner than later and they’ll be deals that we can live with and they can live with.”

  • The Fourth Period: A source told TFP that Shane Doan is not expected to sign with Buffalo. GM Darcy Regier is still looking to make a trade, but nothing is imminent.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks are still in the hunt for Shane Doan.

“Yes, very much so,” responded agent Terry Bross in an email after being asked if San Jose was still on Doan’s list of potential landing spots. “He is very intrigued should things not work out here.”

There have been reports that the Kings and Sharks have offers on the table for Doan. The Canucks are also thought to be in the running.

  • Josh Rimer via twitter: Mike Modano on nextsportstar.com: “”If the Wild contacted me I’d listen to what they would have to say, certainly would be a fitting….ending to a career obviously going back to Minnesota and what that town and what the fans meant to me.”
  • Michael Russo via twitter (via Sean Gentille): The Wild are not interested in Mike Modano.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers GM Dale Tallon said there has been no progress on contract talks with Kris Versteeg. Versteeg filed for salary arbitration. The Panthers would like to sign him to a long term deal, though it doesn’t sound like it will happen before the hearing.
