Injury Notes: Bolland, Marchard, Lupul and Pitkanen

  • Tracey Myers: Blackhawks Dave Bolland is feeling better but is out tonight.
  • Kevin Paul Dupont: The Bruins confirm that winger Brad Marchand has a ‘mild concussion’ from Anton Volchenkov’s elbow on Wednesday.
  • Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star: Maple Leafs Joffrey Lupul hasn’t played since last Thursday, and isn’t sure when he’ll be able to return.

“If I was having bad symptoms, I would be home resting instead of this,” Lupul said. “It’s truly a day-to-day thing, just wake up in the morning and see how I’m feeling, how I’m progressing. There’s really no reason for me to rush right now. I just want to make sure I’m back at 100 per cent.”

The team won’t say it’s a concussion, but Lupul indicated that it might be.

“Yeah,” he said Wednesday, when asked if he believes he suffered a concussion against the Flyers. “I mean, no one’s really said that word to me. But I definitely didn’t sprain my ankle.”

“I think it’s safe to say I took a pretty solid blow to the head,” Lupul said. “Anyone who was watching could have seen that. . . . Obviously anyone who saw me try to go to the bench could tell there were some symptoms.”

  • Stephen Whyno of the Washington Times: Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen broke his calcaneus bone in his heal last week after crashing into the boards. A similar injury occurred to Pat Peakein 1996, and he was only able to play in five more games due to the injury. The Hurricanes and Pitkanen called Peake last week to talk about the injury.

“Your heel bone, the best way to describe it is like an egg. So if you give it a good flick or a thump, it just kind of splinters and cracks like that,” Peake said. “And it just goes right around the whole way. That’s exactly what happened to his. It’s such an odd injury.”

“Am I optimistic that Pitkanen can get back to playing? Yeah, I kind of am, as far as playing, because he’s not going to go the surgery route,” Peake said. “You just hope that obviously the medical aspect of it has come a long way. I know there’s some good doctors and some good people.”

It’s an injury though that could bother him years after he’s done playing.

“They said, ‘How much pain are you in on a daily basis?’ ” Peake said. “And I said, ‘Well, to be honest, I don’t really want him to hear this. I hurt every single day.’ ”
