“There was two other things that we got to the point where it was a yay or nay, and as I’ve said three or four times, it did not involve any of those quote unquote $6-million players,” Chiarelli said.
The Oilers made a few small moves on deadline day, but likely laid some foundations for trade talk closer to the draft. Chiarelli will be looking for a top-pairing defenseman, and could put one of his $6 million players and/or his first overall pick in play.

“I’m fine,” said Chiarelli, when asked about the look of his to-do list in the wake of trade deadline day. “It was good. I call it housekeeping a little bit. For the additions, we got a little bigger. I was fine. I had productive discussions. It was as much as I could expect.”
On the Ottawa Senators …
Chris Stevenson of NHL.com: The only trade the Senators made yesterday was sending Shane Prince to the New York Islanders for a 2016 3rd round pick.
“I said going in it was unlikely we would do much of anything and we accomplished exactly that,” general manager Bryan Murray said.
They looked at acquiring a center after deciding to shut Kyle Turris down for a bit. He’s been playing with a high ankle sprain and has been held pointless in 15 games.
Murray spoke to the Panthers about Brandon Pirri, but when Murray got back to Panthers GM Dale Tallon, Pirri had already been traded to the Ducks for a 2016 6th round pick.
Murray also said that he spoke with Lightning GM Steve Yzerman about Jonathan Drouin.
” kind of knew what he wanted to accomplish with the player. And if it didn’t happen he was going to wait until the summer to decide what to do,” Murray said. “I don’t know what will happen now. It’s his player. What he has to do, he has to do. He felt that if he didn’t get a player that could really help them in the Playoffs this year and more, he was just going to stand pat.”
