Goalie prices are high
Patrick Johnston of the Vancouver Province: Canucks GM Jim Benning gave up a 2020 7th round pick for goaltender Marek Mazanec.
Benning inquired about other goaltenders but found the asking prices too high.
“Some of the other guys on the list, teams wanted second- and third-round picks for. I didn’t want to do that, to trade second- or third-round picks, with us hosting the draft (this) year.”
Canucks could make Sutter available
Jason Brough of The Athletic: With Bo Horvat, Elias Pettersson, Jay Beagle and Adam Gaudette down the middle, the Vancouver Canucks could look to move Brandon Sutter.
Sutter has two years left on his contract and a full no-trade clause. After July 1st it changes to a 15-team no-trade list.
Sutter may be willing to waive if he has some control on where he ends up. The Boston Bruins and Minnesota could be looking for centers.
If the Canucks were willing to retain some salary, he might be more desirable.
The Canucks will mostly retain him past the deadline and find a trade partner in the offseason when teams have a little more cap flexibility.
Ferland hopes he stays and can help out the Hurricanes
Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Carolina Hurricanes pending UFA Micheal Ferland knows his name is in the rumor mill, but he hopes to remain in Carolina.
“Yeah, it’s tough obviously seeing your name all over the place and not sure what’s going to happen,” Ferland said Thursday. “I think we’ve put ourselves in a good spot. I hope I stay here.
“I’d like to get a deal done obviously. Like I said, we’ve put ourselves in a good spot in trying to get into the playoffs and I’d like to stay here and help this team.”
Hurricanes GM Don Waddell said they could use Ferland as an “own rental.”
Ferland admits he hasn’t spoken much with management since they acquired him and doesn’t know their plans.
