It wasn’t the result Edmonton fans were all hoping for. Still, on the night the Vegas Golden Knights eliminated the Oilers 5-2 in the sixth game of the Western Conference Semi-Finals, one lucky fan went home with a cash prize of $1,118,407.50 from the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) 50/50 at Rogers Place. Two other winners took home $10,000 and $1,000, respectfully, in what has become Canada’s biggest 50/50 game.

The EOCF has undeniably rewritten the rulebook on charity fundraising in Canada with its impressive online 50/50 draws. As the puck drops on the ice, a different kind of feverish anticipation occurs amongst fans in Alberta and across Canada. The same type of excitement some online casinos like Wildz Canada offer; a chance to win big while contributing to a great cause.

In an extraordinary show of solidarity, the Oilers’ faithful have been rallying to support the EOCF’s unique initiative, shattering all existing records for 50/50 draws. To date, the largest draw, which took place on August 7, 2020, raised an astounding total of $14.1 million, effectively setting a new benchmark in the world of charity fundraising. This year’s playoff draw continues to grow, with the drawing scheduled for June 19, 2023, at 11:59 AM MT.

The 50/50 draw is a cherished hockey tradition, and the Oilers’ innovative approach to taking it online has proven to be a game-changer. Amid the global pandemic, when physical tickets could no longer be sold at games, the EOCF seized the opportunity to digitize the process. The move brought an unprecedented level of convenience and accessibility to fans, allowing participation from the comfort of their own homes.

“The response to the online 50/50 program has been amazing,” said Natalie Minckler, the EOCF’s Executive Director. “Our fans have shown us tremendous support. We are overwhelmed by their generosity and commitment to our community initiatives.”

The record-breaking jackpot was split, with half of the funds going to one lucky ticket holder and the rest to the EOCF’s community and youth initiatives. This includes funding grassroots hockey programs, scholarships, and various other projects that benefit the community.

The previous record for the 50/50 draw, set in 2020, was also held by the Oilers. However, the latest draw has more than doubled that amount, making it a monumental moment for both the EOCF and the Oilers’ fan base. The astonishing feat also underscores the immense passion and commitment of Oilers’ fans to their team and the broader community.

This online 50/50 draw has opened up a new chapter in the history of charitable fundraising, bringing a real sense of optimism and excitement about the future of community support in the sports world. And with the Oilers setting the bar high, the rest of the hockey world is taking notes.
