The New Jeresy Devils are looking to make a ‘hockey trade’ coming out of the Olympic trade freeze
James Murphy of RG Media: An NHL source is saying the New Jersey Devils are looking to make an impact “hockey trade” to “send a message” to their roster. The trade freeze ends on February 22nd at 11:69 PM ET, and GM Tom Fitzgerald would like to make a move coming out of it.
The Devils are 11 points out and likely looking towards the future. Pending UFAs only include Evgenii Dadonov, Luke Glendening, and Zack MacEwen.
The source, “I know Dawson Mercer is a guy plenty of teams are asking about. I don’t think the Devils necessarily want to move him, but sometimes you need to shake a locker room up by trading a teammate they like and a valuable player.”
NHL Rumors: Is There a Role for Patrik Laine on the Montreal Canadiens?
The source doesn’t know who the Devils have been talking too, but RG Media has learned the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers are also looking to make “hockey trades.” Back in mid-January, RG Media reported the Maple Leafs were interested in Dougie Hamilton, but that was before Luke Hughes went on the LTIR and Hamilton was pulled off the market. It’s believed that Hamilton could be back on the market now.
