Matthew Knies Trade Talks Intensify, but Someone has to Overpay

Trade talks surrounding Matthew Knies appear to be intensifying, but that doesn't mean that he'll be moved. Someone would need to overpay.

Trade talks involving Matthew Knies intensify

Marco D’Amico: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies seems to be in play at this point. It’s not a guarantee that they move him, but it appears that trade talks are intensifying.

  • Marco D’Amico: It’s believed there have been some talks with the Buffalo Sabres, and the No. 4 pick. The San Jose Sharks are also believed to have some interest. The Montreal Canadiens are interested, but hard to see them competing with the Sabres and Sharks.

Max Miller: “Just thinking out loud, I doubt the #SJSharks would part with 2nd OA for Knies and give TOR 1-2 picks. 9th on the other hand, that would be more reasonable.”

NHL Rumors: Florida Panthers, Connor Hellebuyck, Sergei Bobrovsky, And Other Options

If someone is willing to overpay for Matthew Knies

Off the Roster Pod: David Pagnotta, says the Toronto Maple Leafs aren’t shopping Matthew Knies and may not have a big appetite to move him, but if somebody is willing overpay for him, they will listen.

“I don’t think Toronto and John Chayka have a big appetite to move Knies, but if somebody’s going to overpay, then okay, cool, but like we’re willing to, we’re willing to listen.

Like Jordan Kyrou got a pretty good return back from from Washington when he was dealt from St Louis. 16th overall pick, and Connor McMichael, along with another kid. Like that’s that’s actually a pretty good deal. Now, Michael’s an RFA, he needs a new contract, but that’s a pretty good return for a guy in Kyrou, whom I call like Marner-Light. You know, he’s not going to put up as many points, is a playmaker, can score, he’s had 30 goals before, but is also strong defensively, and his first line calibre. So that’s exactly what Washington wanted. They get Kyrou in that, but they paid a, they paid a pretty good price.

Nice, the price tags even higher right now, because you also factor in the age. I don’t know if a team is going to pay that, but the conversations are ongoing. And like I said, Toronto’s got a lot of irons in the fire right now. They had it in the last couple of days. Sounds like it’s boiling over , and maybe we see one or two moves.”

July 1st is Nearing for the Dallas Stars and Jason Robertson to Figure an Extension Out

Luke Fox of Sportsnet: Unless a team is going to ‘blow-your-socks-off’ with an offer for the young, power forward in Matthew Knies, GM John Chayka should hang up the phone.

Former GM Brad Treliving had been trying to get three or four assets for Knies at the deadline. The deal with the Montreal Canadiens that he was working on was believed to involve Alexander Zharovsky, two first-round picks, plus another prospect.

“Honestly, I think Matthew Knies is like a really unique player. His blend of size and skating and skill is really hard to find,” Chayka told Sportsnet.ca the day he was unveiled.

“I’m not aware of what happened at the deadline or what previous regimes thought. I think Mats (Sundin) and I are going to go through and evaluate the roster and make some decisions. But ultimately, I think if you’re making a decision, you’re trying to get better. You’d be really hard-pressed to do better than Matthew Knies.”

Nick Kypreos wrote earlier this week that they should look for two roster players and a pick. Kypreos on the Kyper and Bourne Show, “”Possibly a top-pair D, a first-rounder, and a secondary player… If they move in the next few days, it’ll be to get back into the draft.”

NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs and Morgan Rielly, and the Oilers and Darnell Nurse

The 23-year-old Knies carries a $7.75 million cap hit. He dealt with a knee issue last season, and still managed to put up 23 goals and 43 assists for a career high 66 points. If you trade Knies, you’re looking for the next Knies.
