Fehr hopes for meeting next week … Gary’s plan to cancel Winter Classic … Boogaard’s family files suit … Kings on the Cup
  • Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Don Fehr hopes they can get back to the negotiating table ASAP,

“I hope it will be sometime next week,” said Fehr, speaking on TSN 1290’s Hustler and Lawless show Friday afternoon. “We’re waiting for them to be in a position to do that.

    “It’s up to them.”

“We think that the proposal the players have put forward is a clear road map to a fair and equitable deal,” Fehr said. “We said that as revenues grow the players will take a much lower share of future revenues, that means their share is going to fall toward 50 per cent.

“We said secondly there needs to be a different form of revenue sharing that is targeted to the teams that need it. We have said, third, that if there are real problems out there we assume that some of the higher-revenue clubs will be willing to share and provide some additional revenue-sharing assistance.

“And, fourth,” continued Fehr, “if there’s going to have to be sacrifice after seven years of record revenues and the enormous concessions the players made last time, more than $3 billion over the life of this agreement, that there has to be some other costs somewhere the owners could limit or cut.”

  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: A source has said that unless there is an end to the lockout, Gary Bettman plans to cancel the Winter Classic in November.

“Gary told (the board of governors) he was going to cancel the Winter Classic in November because he didn’t want the players to use the game as leverage,” the source said.

“It’s a scare tactic,” the union source said. “It just proves the NHL has no intention of negotiating any time soon.”

  • AP in the Toronto Star: The parents of the late Derek Boogaard are suing the NHLPA for $9.8 million, the $4.8 million remaining on the contract and $5 million in punitive damages according to TMZ. TMZ is also reporting that NHLPA did not file the papers in time to properly collect the money from the Rangers.

“We are saddened to read reports that the parents of the late Derek Boogaard have filed a lawsuit against the NHLPA,” the union said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “We have not been served with or seen a copy of the complaint, but we are confident that there is no meritorious claim that can be made against the NHLPA in regard to Derek’s tragic death.

“It is not appropriate to comment further at this time.”
