Free Agent Hits I: DiPietro, Bobrovsky, Devils, Gagne, Hurricanes and Maple Leafs
  • David Pagnotta: After “ongoing discussions,” Rick DiPietro’s agent confirms that the Islanders will be buying him out. Katie Strang: DiPietro will get $1.5 million through 2029.
  • Chris Johnston: Sergei Bobrovsky’s new deal is for $5 million this year and $6.25 million next year.
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Just some final details to be ironed out with Patrik Elias’ new deal with the Devils. It appears that David Clarkson will be testing out the free agent market. Lamoriello yesterday:

“David, I don’t know at this point. We’ll certainly talk and I’ll leave it at that.”

The Devils and defenseman Peter Harrold are “not far apart.” The Devils have only had one conversation with Marek Zidlicky in the last month, but there is still a chance he re-signs. Lamoriello met with Johan Hedberg, who now is the odd man out.

“We sat down for quite a while this morning and he’s going to think about some of the things that we talked about and we’re going to talk again,” Lamoriello said.

  • Rich Chere: The Devils made David Clarkson an offer on Sunday.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Simon Gagnecould be back with the Flyers for the right price.

“We’ve had a couple of conversations with his agent, and we will continue to talk,” GM Paul Holmgren said on Monday. “We have interest in bringing him back, but limited cap space.”

  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Hurricanes added defenseman Andrej Sekera at the draft, but could be looking at the free agent market to add another. They could look at Andrew Ference.

“If there’s defensemen for the right price in free agency … I don’t expect it’s going to happen on July 5, but we’ll keep looking around,” Rutherford said. “We said we’re going to change our defense around and we started to do that with Sekera, Murphy and Bellemore as three strong possibilities. If somebody else comes along that we think we can upgrade our position, we will.”

  • Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Five free agents the Maple Leafs should look at: 1. David Clarkson RW 2. Andrew Ference D 3. Rob Scuderi D 4. Stephen Weiss C 5. Douglas Murray D.
