Morning Hits: Boyd, Malkin, Zito and Weeks
  • TSN: Jordan Boyd, a 16-year old prospect with Acadie-Bathurst of the QMJHL, collapsed and died yesterday. He was feeling some discomfort during wind sprints. His father was watching the practice. He was cleared a full medical evaluation before training camp had started.
  • Igor Kleyner: Evgeni Malkin’s dad told SovSport that the Dallas Stars offered Malkin more money than the Penguins did this summer. Malkin was still under contract with the Penguins. Malkin’s dad also said that if Evgeni was to leave the Penguins, it would likely be for the Rangers or Canadiens.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Dispatch: Bill Zito will no longer be an agent as he’s taking an assistant GM position with the Blue Jackets.

“I’ve loved my work these last 18-20 years,” Zito told The Dispatch today. “But you can’t replicate what it’s like to be part of a team, what it’s like to try and win something. To work in this league … it’s a privilege.

“It feels like going away to college for the first time. It’s hard to say goodbye to all you’ve known the last 18 years, but you’re excited for the new adventure.”

  • Chris Kuc: The Blackhawks have hired Steve Weeks as their new goaltending coach.
