Morning Hits: Expansion, Voynov, Glencross, Bernier, and Flames
  • Chris Johsnton: “Gary Bettman says the NHL “has a lot of work to do” before making a final decision on expansion.”
  • Mike Halford of Pro Hockey Talk: Russian news agency TASS on Slava Voynov.

US Immigration & Customs Enforcement Western Region Communications Director Virginia Kice told TASS that ICE’s decision to take Voynov into custody and place him in removal proceedings was based on “a comprehensive review of the case.”

“As with anyone who’s facing deportation, he’ll be afforded due process and the immigration court will ultimately determine whether he’ll be subject to removal from the U.S.,” she said.

An ICE official, who asked not to be identified, told TASS that ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations has declined to set a bond in Voynov’s case “given his prior conviction for a crime of violence.”

  • Andrew Walker: The Maple Leafs have signed Curtis Glencross to a PTO.
  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Flames Joe Colborne may not be completely 100 percent for the start of training camp as he continues to recover from offseason surgery.

“It was a mess in there,” the Calgary Flames forward reported of the wrist issues which required surgery immediately after last season.

“We went in there hoping we could fix it with just a scope, but it turns out we had to cut it open and do some stuff. It’s a pretty serious surgery and you go through your ups and downs throughout the summer thinking that it should be (healing) faster than it is, but you have to trust the process and that it’ll all end up working itself out.”

Ladislav Smid (neck), Paul Byron (sports hernia, wrist and toe) and Josh Jooris (wrist) are all recovering from surgeries and may not be 100 percent in camp.
