Morning Hits: Long List of Ex-Leafs Free Agents, Campbell and Eakin
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Lists ex-Leaf free agents that are still looking for a home: Tomas Kaberle, Ian White, Carlo Colaiacovo, Hal Gill, Steve Sullivan, Brad Boyes, David Steckel, Matthew Lombardi, Tim Connolly, Jamal Mayers, Ryan O’Byrne and Mikhail Grabovski. Ron Hainsey is still available and it may only take $1 million to land him. Grabovski is still unsigned and according to one NHL GM, he wanted too much money and term in the early days for free agency.

“He was trying to cash in on getting the buyout and double dipping,” a general manager said. “And once everybody who wanted a centre signed them, there was no place for him to get the kind of deal he wanted.”

  • Matt Kalman of NHL.com: Bruins Gregory Campbell got mixed results from the x-ray taken of his surgically repaired right foot a couple of weeks ago. Things are looking good, but have not healed enough for him to start skating. He is scheduled for another x-ray on Tuesday.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika looks at Stars center Cody Eakin, noting that he could be the teams second line center, but also may slide in as their third or possibly their fourth center. Heika names eight wingers that Eakin could end up playing with at some point this season. The Stars added depth down the middle this offseason with the acquisitions of Shawn Horcoff and Rich Peverley.
