Joffrey Lupul doesn't ask for a second opinion on his injury, but the NHL will investigate the Toronto Maple Leafs

On the Toronto Maple Leafs …

Chris Johnston: The Maple Leafs added Joffrey Lupul to their “IR” list. They completed Lupul’s Injured Non-Roster Form which is normal after someone fails their medical.

Joffrey Lupul: Statement:

“I responded earlier this week to some negative comments on Instagram. It was an inappropriate response, and I deleted it, but I take full responsibility. It’s been extremely tough not being able to play over the past 1.5 years. I will not be seeking a second opinion, but I hope one day to be able to get back on the ice. I apologize to the media, fans, Leafs organization, and most of all my teammates for this unneeded distraction.”

John Shannon: Even though Lupul isn’t going to request a second opinion, the NHL is going to have an independent doctor medically evaluated him.

Maple Leafs Hot Stove: TSN legal analyst Eric Macramalla was talking about the Maple Leafs/GM Lou Lamoriello’s handling of Joffrey Lupul. Marcramalla thinks the NHL is justified in investing the Leafs and Lamoriello.

“If you read Lupul’s online apology, at no point in that apology does he say that he didn’t tell the truth. At no point in that apology does he say he’s not able to play now. It’s a claim that requires some examination from the league under article 27 of the CBA.

I say that because there’s context and the context is Lou Lamoriello. The first case that I covered as a legal analyst was the Ilya Kovalchuk contract — a 14-year deal with six throwaway years at the end, signed to artificially lower the salary cap amount. I said then that it was clearly a circumvention… You’ve got other players — Mogilny, Malakhov — that Lou has had some fun with; some fun with numbers. We know he generally doesn’t elect to play by the rules. That’s the context here. Add that to Lupul’s comments. Add that to Robidas, who was also put on LTIR and magically now has a job with the Leafs; it’s circumvention if you provide a player with compensation with a consideration outside of the four corners of their contract. That warrants a bit of attention as well.”

Jonas Siegel: Defenseman Martin Marincin has been paired mostly with Toronto Marlies players during camp so far. It’s looking like he could be behind Calle Rosen, Andreas Borgman and possibly Travis Dermott.

On the Boston Bruins …

Joe Haggerty: Forward Matt Beleskey is day-to-day with a foot contusion. Jakob Frosbacka Karlsson is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Boston Bruins: Defenseman Torey Krug took a puck to the jaw on Tuesday and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

On the Columbus Blue Jackets …

Blue Jackets PR: Forward Sam Vigneault will be out for four to six weeks with a broken finger.

Blue Jackets PR: The Blue Jackets signed forward John Mitchell to a PTO.

On the Ottawa Senators …

Bruce Garrioch: Derick Brassard skated yesterday in a no-contact jersey.

On the Montreal Canadiens …

John Lu: Canadiens prospect Noah Juulsen fractured his foot on Monday in Quebec City and is expected to miss six weeks.

On the Los Angeles Kings …

Curtis Zupke: Forward Marian Gaborik said that there is no timetable. He’s started taking some contact and is progressing. It’s not known yet if he’ll get into any preseason games.
