NHL Rumors: Escow, Islanders and Tavares, Hurricanes and Canucks

Mark Easson 06/06/2018

The Carolina Hurricanes are likely to move one of Noah Hanifin or Justin Faulk, as well as Jeff Skinner.

On Escrow …

Pierre LeBrun: “Hearing that projected escrow now for this season could drop to 8 percent; players have been paying 11.5 escrow all year. If it does end up at 8 percent, big drop from the 13.4 percent escrow rate of 2015-16 season. Final HRR math still not finalized for 2016-17 season…”

On the New York Islanders and John Tavares …

Greg Brady: “That’s that for Tavares w/ the Isles. Have heard from far too many connected people that the only way JT was staying was a reaffirmed commitment to Weight as head coach. Isles will attempt to trade his rights before July 1.”

Jimmy Murphy: Tavares and Doug Weigh were very close, so expect Tavares to hit the free agent market.

Chris Johnston: Lou Lamoriello when asked how yesterday’s firings will impact his ability to re-sign Tavares: “That certainly has not and did not enter into any of the decisions that were made.”

Dan Rosen: Potential head coaching candidates or at least canadidates to be added to their staff: Sheldon Keefe, Barry Trotz (if he becomes available), Scott Stevens, John Madden, D.J. Smith, Alain Vigneault, and Rick Bowness. Jacques Lemaire could join the organization in some capacity.

On the Carolina Hurricanes and Vancouver Canucks …

Chris Nichols of FRS Hockey: Bob McKenzie was on TSN 1040 talking about the Carolina Hurricanes and defensemen Noah Hanifin and Justin Faulk, and Jeff Skinner.
There is no urgency to trade anyone yet, but believes one of Hanifin or Faulk will be get traded, and the Skinner is likely gone as well.

“We know that Vancouver has expressed interest in Hanifin. I wouldn’t be surprised if Vancouver has at least expressed some interest in veteran center Ryan O’Reilly out of Buffalo. So I’m sure the Canucks are doing their due diligence on a lot of different players and they’re probably looking at enough veteran players in free agency, or close to it, that will get the market all in a tizzy because people will say, ‘I thought we were rebuilding!’”
