The Red Wings didn’t plan to upgrade their blueline through free agency. It’s better to keep their trade options open for the likes of Cam Fowler, Kevin Shattenkirk or Tyson Barrie.
If they are not able to trade for a defensman while moving out a foward, both Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou are candidates to start the season in the AHL. Both are waiver exempt.
Any trade package for a young defenseman would likely start with either Tomas Tatar or Gustav Nyquist, along with a high draft pick or decent prospect.
On Pavel Datsyuk …
Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Pavel Datsyuk is waiting paperwork that would allow him to sign a two year, worth 250 million rubles ($3.8 million) annually.
“We are waiting on a transfer card from Arizona and we expect it to arrive shortly,” Dan Milstein, Datsyuk’s agent, told the Free Press today. “As soon as we get that, Pavel will sign with one of the KHL clubs.”
SKA is the likely front-runner. Datsyuk will likely play until 2018 as he wants to be apart of the Russian Olympic team.
