On the Toronto Maple Leafs, Arizona Coyotes and Auston Matthews …

Chris Nichols of Today’s Slapshot: Bob McKenzie on TSN 1260 on the Toronto Maple Leafs, Arizona Coyotes, the first overall draft pick and Auston Matthews.

McKenzie said the Maple Leafs are not interested in trading the first overall pick the right to draft Auston Matthews. They worked hard to finish in last.

The Coyotes may be interested in having Matthews in their organization, but they are unlikely willing to give up what the Maple Leafs would require for the pick.

“I’ve heard rumors out there that, ‘Oh yeah, they’re going to give up Max Domi, Dylan Strome and the No. 7 overall pick, and if they have to they’ll throw in No. 20 or Christian Dvorak to make it happen.’

“I don’t believe for a moment that they are interested in giving up what they believe are foundational players in their organization. I don’t think they want to give up Max Domi under any circumstances. I don’t think they want to give up Dylan Strome under any circumstances.

“Could I see them offering the No. 7 and the No. 20 pick and a player like Christian Dvorak? Sure, I could see that. I don’t think that even gets the Leafs to pick up the phone.”

McKenzie thinks there are likely to be some talks between the two teams. Don’t expect the Coyotes to made a bad hockey trade, and that is what it would have to be to get the Maple Leafs to trade the pick.

On the Winnipeg Jets and Jacob Trouba …

Chris Nichols of Today’s Slapshot: Bob McKenzie on TSN 1260 on Winnipeg Jets restricted free agent defenseman Jacob Trouba, and if the Jets would move him as opposed to giving him the big money he’s asking for.

McKenzie says the Avalanche could be thinking he’s look good in an Avs jersey. There were rumors that Trouba wanted a seven or eight year deal, at a big number. Do the Jets want to go with a bridge deal or long-term?

“So there’s lots going on there. I can’t sit here and unequivocally tell you, ‘Yeah, Trouba is going to be traded because the Jets aren’t going to get a deal done with him.’ The Jets may very well get a deal done with Jacob Trouba, end of story, that’s that.

“But I can you this – there are going to be a bunch of National Hockey League teams calling the Jets and saying, ‘What are you doing with Trouba? If you’re going to move him, we’re interested.’”
