The New York Islanders have traded defenseman Nick Leddy to the Detroit Red Wings for Richard Panik and a 2021 second-round pick. The pick originally belonged to the Edmonton Oilers – No. 52.

The Red Wings are retaining 50 percent of Panik’s contract – $1.375 million.

The 30-year old Leddy was drafted 16th overall in the first round of the 2009 draft by the Minnesota Wild. He carries a $5.5 million salary cap hit.

The 30-year old Panik was drafted 52nd overall in the second round of the 2009 draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has two years left on his deal.

Thoughts from the media

Rhys Jessop: “Detroit got the worse player, added salary and cap liabilities, paid futures, and ensured they’d lose a better defender to Seattle. There’s literally no upside to this deal for them.”

James O’Brien: “It feels like Steve Yzerman makes at least one move per offseason that shakes my confidence in his rebuildin’ ‘bilities”

Dom Luszczyszyn: “the red wings paid assets for leddy?????”

Adam Gretz: “Do not get that trade for Detroit at all.”

Earl Schwartz: “So Detroit basically turned Mantha into Vrana, 23rd overall, and Nick Leddy. Plus $1.375m retained for the next two seasons.

Seems like a two steps forward, one step back type of thing with the salary retention, but they could still do well by flipping Leddy at the deadline.
