On the Toronto Maple Leafs …

Cap Friendly: The Maple Leafs re-signed defenseman Martin Marincin to a two-year deal with a $1.25 million cap hit – $1.2 million next year and $1.3 million in 2017-18.

Kristen Shilton: Marincin was the last Maple Leafs player who had an arbitration date so the Maple Leafs will now have a second buyout window which begins the third day after the signing and lasts for 48 hours – Monday to Wednesday.

On the Edmonton Oilers …

Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers re-signed defenseman David Musil to a one-year deal.

Bob Stauffer: Musil will get $600,000 in the NHL, $75,000 in the AHL with $85,000 being guaranteed. He would need to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL this season.

On the Detroit Red Wings …

Brendan Savage of MLive: Red Wings GM Ken Holland has been trying to add a defenseman since the draft in June, mainly a top-four defenseman.

“I don’t think we need defensemen,” Holland told MLive. “I think we need legitimate top four defenseman. I’ve got defensemen. My answer to that question (whether a trade is possible) would be not many are available.

“I’ve talked to a number of teams leading up to the draft. I have talked a little bit over the last couple of weeks. I’ll continue to talk. But it’s not like there’s a surplus of top four defensemen on the market.

“A top four defenseman has to become available.”

If a team is willing to move a top-four defenseman, it won’t come cheap.

“The team that might be looking to move a top four defensemen, we have to have what he’s looking for,” Holland said. “He’s got to want what we’ve got to offer and then obviously the other factor that is in the game for both clubs is what does your guy make? What does my guy make?

“If a top four defenseman is available, if we have what they’re looking for, then when you’re in a cap world …”
