The Toronto Maple Leafs will introduce Sundin as senior executive advisor of hockey operations and John Chayka as GM later today

Sportsnet: The Toronto Maple Leafs will be having a 1:00 p.m. ET press conference to introduce Mats Sundin as senior executive advisor of hockey operations and John Chayka as GM.

Friedman: “Yes, so we wanted to wait until we could know as much as we possibly could. So here’s what we have. The Maple Leafs are expected to make an announcement about their new hockey operations department with a media conference .

What we expect them to announce is the return of Matt Sundin in the position of senior executive advisor of hockey operations. It is a full-time commitment. Sundin and his family will be moving back to Toronto and John Cheka as the new general manager.

Inside the NHL’s Surge in Sportsbook Advertising

There are no other additions or changes planned for Monday. So that’s it’s been rumored the past couple of days, and we expect them to make it official sometime later this . Sundin is senior executive advisor of hockey operations, and Chayka as the new GM.

Ron Maclean: “So who answers to whom?

Friedman: “Okay, so the structure. This is obviously a question a lot of people are going to have, and I’m assuming we’re going to find out more tomorrow. But here’s my understanding of how it’s going to work.

Obviously, the goal is for the two of them to work together in tandem and make the decisions. But there must be somebody who reports to the MLSE president, that is Keith Pelley, and that’s going to be Chayka.

Now, during the interview process, the Maple Leafs, whoever they interviewed, they advertised the position as their head of hockey operations, and Chayka will be that. He is the one who’s going to report to Keith Pelley, from what I heard.

Sportsnet: Statement from MLSE president and CEO Keith Pelley:

“Today is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. I’m thrilled to welcome John and Mats to their roles, two great hockey minds that will strengthen our entire hockey club. From the start of this process, it’s been about building a championship-calibre team for our fans and our city and today is an important step towards that goal.”

If the Toronto Maple Leafs Want to Make a Big Change, Should they Consider Auston Matthews or William Nylander?

Statement from John Chayka:

“I’m honoured to join the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and excited to work alongside Mats and the entire organization. This is one of hockey’s most historic franchises, with a passionate fan base who want to win. I’m focused on building a team that is competitive, driven and relentless — one that is in the best position to win for our fans and for the City of Toronto.”

Statement from Mats Sundin:

“This fan base deserves greatness and I am grateful for the opportunity to help this team, organization and city achieve that. My love for the Maple Leafs and the City of Toronto is an important part of who I am and who I will always be. I look forward to working closely with John as we both recognize the incredible opportunity and responsibility to win here in Toronto.”
