Decision time is fast approaching for Pavel Datsyuk‘s NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings. It’s been well documented about his desire to return to Russia to be closer to his family, and that this past season could be his last in the NHL.
After a vacation, he’s expected to meet with Red Wings GM Ken Holland to discuss the situation in mid-June. If he does leave the Red Wings, they would be stuck with his $7.5 million cap hit, which they’d look to trade.
Regardless with what happens, Datsyuk will go down as a fan favorite and will one day find himself in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Even if you weren’t a Red Wings fan, it was hard not to like how he played the game.
Datsyuk played in 953 games over his 14-year NHL career. He scored 314 goals, added 604 assists for 918 points. Those numbers would have been higher had he not battled some injuries in the later stages of his career.
Datsyuk won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 2002 and in 2008. In 157 career NHL playoff games, Datsyuk scored 42 goals, with 71 assists for 113 points.
He’ll go down as one of the best two-way players in the game. Datsyuk won three consecutive Frank J. Selke Trophy’s from 2007-08 to 2009-10. He was a finalist for the Selke Trophy from 2010-11 to 2012-13.
Datsyuk was also know for soft hands which resulted in numerous “Datsyukian” goals. In celebration of his career, we’ve put together our favorite Pavel Datsyuk goals.
Due to Datsyuk wearing No. 13 throughout his Red Wing career, we’ve turned our top 10 Pavel Datsyuk goals into his top 13 goals.
13. Datsyuk – March 12, 2006 against Chicago
Datsyuk takes a tipped pass just outside the blueline and goes in alone on Nikolai Khabibulin. He cuts across on the backhand and then flips it over the blocker.
“Here we go again, get the psychologist out.
Ah, this is too bad for, you got to feel for Khabibulin here and the Hawks.”
