Agent Turned GM Heading to Sweden to Chase Sedins — TSN is reporting that Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis has flown to Sweden, and is meeting with the Sedin’s in advance of Wednesday’s opening of the Free Agency Period. If nothing else, this certainly shows that the Canucks are serious about them coming back. Though i am a big fan of the twin’s, they top my list of “Players most likely to be overpaid” this off-season. This should be the last off-season with players receiving $6.5-$8.5mm salaries (Sedin’s, Boumeester, Hossa, Gaborik, Havlat etc). The realities of the global econimic crisis, should be reflected with a serious market correction in free agent salaries in the summer of 2010.
Reminds me of Reason #46 Why Peter Chiarelli is a great GM: Marc Savard makes $5mm this upcoming season. And to think, GM Glen Sather pays two second line centers (Gomez & Drury) over $7mm each, and an AHL defencman (Wade Redden) $6.5mm. Remember when people talked about Sather as if he were an all-time great GM?
